Costs
One-time or monthly: how websites are paid for
A website can be paid for once, monthly or by yearly renewal, and the pattern changes who owns it. Here is how each works and what keeps costing money after launch.
“Pay monthly websites”, “monthly website design packages” and “website yearly cost” all describe the same worry: what will this cost me, and for how long? The honest answer depends on how the site is sold. There are three patterns, and they are different in more than price.
Pattern 1: one-time fee for a built site
You pay a fixed amount for the work, and the finished site is yours: the design, the pages and the files, on a domain and hosting that you control. My packages work this way. Essential is ₹19,999, Growth ₹24,999 and Complete ₹34,999, excluding applicable taxes, as one-time website fees. The pricing page lists what each includes.
What this pattern leaves for later: the running costs below, plus anything you choose to add.
Worth checking: that ownership of the files, the domain and the hosting account is in your name and in writing. Who owns your website explains why.
Pattern 2: monthly subscription
A monthly price that includes a site, its hosting and sometimes its updates. It looks cheap at the start and it can be convenient. The thing to understand is that you are renting. Stop paying, and the site may stop. Ask, before you start:
- Can I take my content and design with me if I leave? In what form?
- What happens to the address and the pages if I cancel?
- Is the price fixed for a stated period, or can it rise?
- Is anything essential, such as a form, locked behind a higher plan?
A subscription is a sensible choice for some businesses, especially a very small one that wants no technical responsibility. It is a poor choice when nobody asked those four questions.
Pattern 3: yearly renewals
Some costs are neither one-time nor monthly. They fall due every year and are easy to forget:
- Domain name. Renewed yearly. If it lapses, the site’s address can be lost.
- Hosting. Billed yearly or monthly, depending on the provider.
- Anything with a licence, such as a paid font, plugin or tool.
Put the renewal dates in your own calendar and keep the accounts in your own name. Domain, DNS and hosting: who does what and questions to ask about a hosting offer help.
What keeps costing money after a one-time build
| Cost | How it usually recurs | Optional? |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | Yearly | No, if you want to keep the address |
| Hosting | Monthly or yearly | No, if the site must stay live |
| Post-launch bug support | Included for a fixed period in each package: 14, 30 or 45 days | Included, then it ends |
| Maintenance and monitoring | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 per month, with the scope in a written proposal | Yes |
| SEO after the first month | ₹5,000 per month from month two for Growth; quoted separately for Complete | Yes |
| Advertising and paid tools | Whatever you choose | Yes |
Nothing optional starts or bills without your agreement. See website maintenance and website design with SEO for what each covers.
How to compare a one-time quote with a monthly one
Add up the first three years of each, including the domain, hosting, tax and anything that is not in the quote. Then ask what you own at the end of that time. A site that costs less per month and leaves you owning nothing is not the same product as a site that costs more once and is yours.
If you tell me what you sell and how many pages you think you need, I can say which package fits and write down exactly which recurring costs apply. Message or call Harman.
