Costs
How to read a website quote: the lines that matter
Two quotes with different totals are rarely quotes for the same thing. These are the lines to compare, the questions to ask when a line is missing, and how to spot a low price that leaves things out.
Published guides to website costs in India give wide, overlapping ranges, and many are written by companies that sell hosting, builders or services. Those ranges are useful for one thing only: they tell you that price depends on scope. The quote in front of you is a better guide than any range, if you know which lines to read.
The lines every quote should answer
- How many pages, and what counts as a page. “A 20-page website” can mean 20 distinct pages or 8 pages plus filters and anchors. Ask for the list of pages and what is on each.
- What the design includes. One direction or several, from your input or from a ready-made theme, and who approves it.
- How many rounds of changes. And what a change outside the agreed scope costs.
- What you must supply. Text, photographs, logos, product data, logins. See what to prepare.
- What is not included. A good quote says so. If it does not, ask.
- Search work. Is it a one-time setup, ongoing monthly work, or nothing? A line saying “SEO included” is not enough; compare it with what an SEO line should list.
- Domain and hosting. Who buys them, in whose name, and what they cost each year. They are normally separate from the build price.
- Tax. Whether the price includes tax or tax is added, and whether you will get a tax invoice. This depends on how the seller is registered, so ask the seller and your accountant. This note does not give tax advice.
- Payment stages. How much is due when, and what each payment is for. Be careful with large payments before any work is visible.
- Dates and dependencies. When each stage finishes, and what delays it, especially late content.
- After launch. How long fixes are covered, how to ask for them, and what ongoing support costs.
- Ownership and handover. Who owns the files and the design, and what you receive at the end. See what you should receive when the site is finished.
Signs a low price is leaving something out
A low price is not automatically dishonest, because some projects genuinely are small. It is a reason to check which of these is missing:
- the page count is vague or counts anything as a page;
- the quote does not mention revisions;
- hosting is included “for life” without saying what the hosting is or who owns the account;
- search work is promised without saying what will be done;
- the quote lists features but no deliverables;
- there is pressure to pay everything before work starts.
A worked comparison
These two quotes are invented for illustration. They are not from any real provider, and no price is implied.
| Line | Quote A (lower total) | Quote B (higher total) |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | “Up to 10 pages” | 30 listed pages |
| Design | Ready-made theme | One custom direction |
| Revisions | Not stated | Two rounds |
| Domain and hosting | “Included for 1 year”, account in the seller’s name | Not included; set up in your name |
| Search work | “SEO friendly” | Titles, descriptions and a sitemap set up; no monthly work |
| Tax | Not stated | Added at invoice |
| After launch | Not stated | 14 days of fixes |
| Payment | 100% in advance | In stages tied to delivery |
Quote A is not a bad quote because it is cheaper. It is a different thing: a smaller, themed site with open questions. The right move is to ask Quote A to fill in the blank lines, then compare again.
How my packages are written, as an example
My pricing page lists the three packages, the page ranges, what each includes and what it does not, and how I count a page. You can read the pricing page and judge it by this checklist. If a line is unclear there, tell me, because that is a defect in the page. Prices are one-time fees in Indian rupees, excluding applicable taxes; domain, hosting and paid tools are separate.
What to do with this
Send the same questions to every provider you are considering, and compare the answers rather than the totals. A provider who answers clearly and in writing is already giving you information about how the project will go. If you want a written quote from me, message or call Harman; the proposal covers each of the lines above.
