Choosing
Do I need a website for my small business?
Not every business needs a website today, and some need one urgently. Here is how to tell which you are, and the cheapest first step either way.
I build websites, so I am the wrong person to give you a neutral answer to “do I need a website?” I will try anyway, by telling you the cases where I would say not yet.
When a website clearly helps
- People look you up before they contact you. Buyers of anything costly, technical or risky usually check. If they find nothing, or something thin, some of them stop.
- You serve people who do not know you. A stranger searching for what you sell, or comparing providers, needs somewhere to judge you.
- You have things to show. Products, specifications, projects, a menu, a price list, documents.
- You want contact to be easy. A page with a call button and a WhatsApp link is available at midnight and costs nothing per visitor.
- You sell to businesses. B2B buyers expect a site, a catalogue and a way to ask for a quote.
When something else may come first
- Your customers all come by word of mouth and you are at capacity. A website will not hurt, but it is not your bottleneck.
- You sell through a marketplace that already brings orders. A site can wait until you want to depend on it less; see own website or IndiaMART listing.
- Your business is hyperlocal and map-driven. A well-kept map listing, if you are eligible, can do more than a weak site. Check who can list a business.
- The budget is very small. A single clear page or a builder may be a better first step than a custom site; see a website under 15,000 rupees.
What a website cannot do alone
A website is not a sales team. It will not bring customers by itself, and no one can promise that a site will rank, bring traffic or generate leads. Google’s own page on whether you need an SEO is a good reminder that search work is a decision with costs and no guarantee. What a site does is give the customers who do find you, by any route, a clear place to decide.
A simple test
Ask yourself three things:
- If a customer searched for my business name today, what would they find? If the answer is nothing or a stranger’s page, that is a problem.
- If they found me, could they contact me in one tap? If not, you are losing enquiries.
- Could I show them proof I am real and good at this? If not, something is missing.
If all three are fine without a website, you may not need one yet. If any is not, a website, or a listing, solves it.
The cheapest useful first step
You do not need 50 pages. A small site with a clear first screen, your services or products, a few photographs, a phone number and a WhatsApp link does most of the work. What pages a business website needs lists the pages that earn their place, and taking your business online: first steps puts the decisions in order.
If you decide yes
My smallest package is Essential at ₹19,999 for 20 to 30 pages, frontend only. The pricing page lists exactly what each package includes. If you are unsure whether you need one, message or call Harman with what you sell; if the honest answer is “not yet”, I will say so.
